6th Century
The saxons created the first settlement/farm by the river Lea in Luton when they conquered Bedfordshire. Most people lived by farming and the town became a central point between surrounding villages as Luton had a market. By the middle ages, the population had risen to around 1,500 people.
Middle Ages
Luton had 6 mills with one of the mills giving the name to Mill Street. The Lord of the Manor built a castle in 1139 but it was demolished in 1154 and that is where the name Castle Street came from.
